This simple notion is true for the survival of the animals we see today; such simple things have had massive effects on the modern animals and how they carry themselves. Humans have incredible intelligence when it comes to problem-solving, a trait we share with apes such as Sultan (Koehler's study of chimpanzees), but this tool-making and problem-solving is also seen in birds.
New Caledonian Corvids were in a study of compound tool making to see the extent of this problem-solving. Eight wild-caught corvids were brought into a 12-round trial that slowly built in difficulty. Each failure earns disqualification, and so as the first round began, four completed the task and followed through to the next rounds. Despite the small group, even half of the group being able to create tools to seek out food is incredible for the argument for or against other animals to carry anthropomorphic level intelligence like monkeys or animals. This is key for growth in animals, and growth is evolution on a smaller scale. These are the stepping stones for birds and apes alike to begin crafting more to succeed in their respective areas.
